TH 10 to CSHA 60
Project Details
To improve safety and traffic flow at the busy, high-speed intersection of TH 10 and CSAH 60 in Becker County, a rural R-Cut (Restricted Crossing U-Turn) was constructed. This design reduces severe crashes by limiting direct conflict points where vehicles cross paths.
A few key benefits include:
- Improved Safety and Traffic Flow: The R-Cut reduces the number of conflict points, helping to prevent crashes and maintain smooth traffic flow on the major highway.
- Reduced Delay: Vehicles approaching the intersection experience fewer delays, resulting in more efficient travel times for all.
- Enhanced Driver Awareness: The unique layout encourages drivers to stay alert and pay closer attention as they navigate the intersection.
- Simplified Driver Decisions: Drivers turning from the side street only need to look in one direction before merging, making the turning process safer and easier.
- Reduced Severity of Crashes: Instead of crossing oncoming traffic, left-turning drivers make a right turn and than a U-turn. This reduces the likelihood of serious crashes, such as T-bone collisions. If a crash does happen, it’s more likely to be a minor rear-end or sideswipe collision
Overall, the R-Cut design is a forward-thinking solution designed to create safer and more efficient travel conditions on busy rural roads. To learn more about this project and R-Cut/J-Turns, visit MnDOT’s project page.
