City of Minot
16th Street Reconstruction
Storm Sewer Improvements
Project Details
16th Street is a major corridor through the City of Minot. The proposed reconstruction of 16th Street SW from 14th Avenue SW to 2nd Avenue SW allowed the City of Minot to evaluate and upgrade the storm sewer along the project corridor. Storm sewer improvements along 16th Street from 14th Avenue to the Mouse River, and a proposed pond, significantly reduced street flooding.
On the NDDOT’s 2004 Urban Road System Map for Minot, 16th Street is classified as an urban road. According to Article 89-14 of the North Dakota Administrative Code, the storm drain design flood frequency for an urban road is a 5-year 24-hour design event. Burdick Expressway is classified as being on the secondary regional system, which requires a 10-year design event. Apex used XPSWMM to complete hydrologic and hydraulic analyses for the 16th Street improvements. The project corridor consisted of two main storm sewer systems, with storm sewer trunkline sizes ranging from 24” to 72”.
One system consisted of two detention ponds with a total volume of 19.8 acre-feet. The proposed southern storm sewer system was designed to direct a significant flow rate to the upper detention pond to reduce the flooding at the intersection of Burdick Expressway and the railroad underpass.
