Bismarck Parks & Recreation
Schaumberg Arena Expansion - Facility Lighting

Project Details

The project added 64,000 square feet to the existing 33,000 square-foot ice arena providing the facility a second sheet of ice for the Bismarck community to utilize.

The facility is a combination of masonry units and pre-engineered metal building panels. The metal building portion makes up the majority of the ice rink with masonry units located on the lower 10 feet for durability. There are numerous locker rooms for both local and visiting teams and a separate locker room area for the referees.

The lighting within the facility is controlled by a central low voltage (digital) lighting control system. The system uses a central time clock, photo controller, and digital processor to schedule events within the lighting system to turn off lights in the common areas when they are not required. The new rink is illuminated using LED high bay fixtures with dimming capability, the lighting was designed to allow for low-level lighting during practices and open skating times. The rink lighting can also be set to a high level for high school hockey games.

The facility has hard-wired communications systems as well as wireless systems. An internet protocol (IP) based video surveillance system and access control system was installed throughout the facility. The entire facility is wired with a sound system to be used during open skating and games, the sound system also allows the news media to connect directly into the system for recording purposes.

The facility has three large meeting rooms on the upper level which can be rented for different events, the rooms can be combined into one large room if needed. All the meeting rooms overlook the new and existing rinks and have access to a dedicated concession area.

Challenges

The owner needed to maintain the operation of the existing facility during the construction of the addition. The existing portion of the building was kept online by providing a temporary connection to the new electrical service and then switched over to the new service once the addition was completed.
