West Lake Drive Phase 3 Improvements

Project Details

In 2018, the City of Detroit Lakes, Becker County, and Apex Engineering Group began planning the West Lake Drive Phase 3 Improvements to enhance the section of West Lake Drive (Becker County State Aid Highway 22) between Washington Avenue and Legion Road. The project scope includes upgrading underground utilities, making surface improvements to the street, curb, and gutter, adding a sidewalk and multi-use trail, and improving boat access to Little Detroit Lake.

Apex played a pivotal role in ensuring the project’s success by helping the City and County secure a total of $5.1 million in critical grant funding. This significant financial support included $2.2 million from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) through the Transportation Alternatives and Local Road Improvement Programs, as well as $2.9 million from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) through its Climate Resiliency Grant program. The ability to obtain such substantial funding was essential for advancing the project and making the planned enhancements possible. In addition to leading the funding efforts, Apex provides engineering services for all phases of this project from start to finish. Construction is scheduled to take place in 2026.
