Overview

The Department of Transportation has been facing the challenge of a relentless wet cycle affecting the lakes and prairie pot-hole regions across the State.  Sections of State Highways are going under water in these closed basins where natural outlets are sometimes 10 to 30 feet higher than the existing roads.  The hydraulic analysis is the key to these grade raise projects.  Apex's water resource engineers assisted the NDDOT in developing criteria and methodologies which tell the required number of feet to raise the roadways in these closed basins.

Project Details

Preliminary Engineering/PCR and Final Design/Bid Documents were provided for the realignment of 1.43 miles of ND Hwy 46 around an existing water body near RP 14.  The project originally began as a 15' grade raise and plans were completed for the grade raise in April 2011.  Due to difficulties in obtaining the necessary right of way (ROW) for the grade raise, a realignment alternative was introduced and evaluated in a PCR Addendum.  The realignment was selected as the preferred alternative.  The appropriate ROW was acquired and the construction was completed summer of 2012. The project also required utility coordination and relocation.
