Overview

The City of Perham's south water tower was in need of recoating. With the recent installation of a new elevated water storage tank on the City's north side, there was more flexibility for the south water tower improvements. The tank was originally constructed in 1977, and the most recent inspection called for an exterior recoat along with an interior wet recoat. Apex assisted with review of potential coating alternatives with the City of Perham. After reviewing potential options, the City selected a unique design to allow for the tank to act as a billboard along Trunk Highway 10.

Approach

The interior wet phase required the tank to be removed from service, and confined to alleviate the potential for adverse effects on neighboring properties. Sandblasting was used to remove the existing surface. The exterior of the tank was pressure washed to remove existing chalking, dirt, mold and mildew. Following surface preparations, the tank was overcoated utilizing a dryfall system to allow for installation without primary containment.

Outcome

The project was constructed in 2013. The yellow banner stands out from the black basecoat, and the Perham Public Schools Yellowjacket mascot is a tribute the neighboring Elementary and Middle Schools. The tank was selected as a "Tank of the Year" finalist by TNEMEC and was featured in their 2014 calendar.
