Emergency Generator Installation

Mandan, ND

Emergency Power Distribution
Overview

The National Information Solutions Cooperative is a data processing and computer support agency for many rural electric and telephone cooperatives throughout the upper Midwest. The management team required reassurance that the data and services they provide to their business partners would not be interrupted during a power outage.

Project Details

With an electrical room located in the middle of the building and 15 feet below the exterior finished grade, Apex Engineering Group located the existing underground service conductors and re-routed them into two new automatic transfer switches, then into the existing switchboards.

Apex also upgraded the existing utility metering configuration based on input from the utility company. The existing metering equipment was located within the existing utility transformer and also within the existing electrical switchboard. The new configuration relocated all metering equipment within the utility transformer and simplified the metering installation.

The installation of a new 600 kW diesel stand by generator provides redundant power to the entire office facility. In the event of a power failure, the diesel generator will be ready and online within 10 seconds. This coupled with the use of an uninterruptible power supply (batteries) ensures power is provided during the brief outage.
